It's like losing Shirley all over again!

We had a rough morning this weekend. It was even my birthday. We had triplets and twins born the night before, and lost one to the cold. I had gone out to the barn to check on the remaining lambs, and feed one that was orphaned...

So MANY triplets! What is in the water this year!

Onyx not only surprised us with triplets, she surprised us with their size and the fact that she is taking great care of all three of them. They have just had their first round of vaccines, and they are going great.

Taking care of our super sweet Firestar made  me start thinking of lambs and data. She was born at 3.5 pounds, and another triplet born just a few weeks prior was born at 14 pounds. Those two are at wild ends of the spectrum for lamb sizes.

It made me (spreadsheet nerd)...

You may recall me discussing our history with triplet lambs here.

It's January, 2020, and we are just getting into lambing season. So far this month, we have already had 2 sets of triplets. These were both surprises, but maybe they should not have been. Onyx is a lamb w...

OK, I won't lie, Autumn is my favorite season. Sweaters, hot apple cider, all the beautiful colors. I love fall. It seemed to skip us up a bit this year. We got tossed whole heartedly into Winter, weather we liked it or not (did you see what I did there? That was on pu...

UGH, this year, April STINKS.

Amidst saying goodbye to one of the best dogs ever (and the subsequent 3 days of being ignored by his brother - no worries, he has since forgiven me), learning that JoJo has a penchant for murdering young chickens, wind wreaking havoc on th...

March 17, 2018

We have completed yet another lambing season, which has been fun. A few bumps along the way. But all in all a good set of babies and happy mamas.  I started tracking a lot of data on our flock. I am hoping to build a somewhat predictive model so that I have an estimate...

February 5, 2018

Remember this post?  This is the post where I shared some of my ewe data, the info that helps me determine which ewe is going to leave the flock. I do like to eliminate, intentionally, at least one ewe per year. First, it provides yummy breakfast sausage for us and our...

I had my money on Freyja!

Every morning when I let the sheep out, I do a bit of a walk around. I get to see who's pregnant, who might not be, sometimes see the rams in action. But I've been watching the size of my ewes' udders grow and it gives me an idea of who might l...
